Diani – May 26, 2026 (HoAREC&N-AAU) - Regional training, on Governance of Environment, Climate-Induced Migration, Human Mobility, is underway with the objectives of promoting an interactive and participatory learning and building on evidence and knowledge on the characteristics of migration, its patterns, drivers, trends, the nexus between migration, environment and development,

The intensive training initiated by MECMEA project (Managing the Impacts of Environmental Change and Conflict on Mobility in Eastern Africa) is financed by the European Union and Contracted by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and implemented by regional consortium led by the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network at Addis Ababa University (HoAREC&N-AAU).

Mr. John Ajjugo, MECMEA Regional Program Coordinator at HoAREC&N-AAU, briefed about the objective of the traininazg. High level officials, representing Migration related Ministries, Departments and Directorates from Ethiopia, Djibouti, South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Burundi are taking part in the training.

In the opening and first day session, Professor Mekuria Argaw, Executive Director of HoAEC&N-AAU,presented and shared on Climate-Induced Migration and the Nexus of Climate Change, Conflict, and Human Mobility.He further provided deep dive into the vulnerability of the East Africa region to the impacts of climate change, and showed the linkages/pathways of climate change-conflict-human mobility nexus.

The training will continue for the week and cover important issues on International Migration Law; Migration and international relations; Migration and Development; African Response to Migration; Institutional Arrangements for Coordinating Migration Policy Making and Implementation including the Common African Position on Migration and Development. The regional training brought over 35 participants drawn from policy makers, national regional government representatives, local authorities including city planners, environmental experts, practitioners and community leaders.
